A friend recently confided in me that he and his long-time live-in girlfriend were breaking up. He wondered if I could give him some advice on "logistics." The idea that I've become a break-up expert is strange to me, but I was willing to help in whatever way I could. Luckily, they decided to try to work things out and my services are no longer needed.

Meanwhile, Mary has moved in with her boyfriend after dating him for one month. Her lease was up, so she decided to jump in. "When I tell you these things," she said, "I can sense you judging me."

"I'm skeptical," I replied. "But I hope it works out. And if it doesn't work out, you'll be okay. And if it does, it's a storybook romance, right?"

I've been thinking about leases and love. I wonder how many relationships end because the lease is up? I mean literally. For N and I it came down to, the lease is up at the end of June, do we sign up for another year together? The answer was no. I don't think either of us were one hundred percent certain that we wouldn't have been able to make another year work, but the chances were slim. And if we were going to lose each other, we didn't want to lose our security deposit too.

You know, I'm pretty sure Dr. Phil suggested thinking of marriage as a one year renewable contract. With a lease, though, you don't get to register at Target.

Hey Arnie,

This is Timmy from Tucson.

Just wanted to write and say I miss you being funny.

Are you still funny. Cause if not, then I guess I could stop missing you. Or at least the funny you. The unfunny you can get lost!

Hello stranger.
I am also a randomish reader (someone posted your url on the CIN) and I too read "obsessively" from beginning to end. Your writing is great. My longtime boyfriend and I are breaking up in January when I move back to New York. It's weird to know...but..I guess I'll be ok huh?

i've been reading this blog obsessively as well, on company time just like everyone else apparently. I found it because my girlfriend and I are breaking up in August when she moves to London. You seem ok, so i'm not as worried. The writing really is great, reminiscent of David Sedaris. There's this amazing balance of humor and sadness, the mundane and the outlandish. Basically you could probably publish this blog as is and it would do pretty well.

I like Mary's impulsiveness, she seems pretty smart and I think spontaneity can be great, overthinking takes the fun out things. Hoping everything works out for her...

You wrote this blog seven years ago. Your story is sort of similar to mine. See that lease you put up...my name currently sits on a lease not to expire until April of 2014. He lives in Washington, I now live back in Michigan. It's been hell. I don't have it in me to get removed from the lease or even to get a new license. It's been seven months since I've seen him. I've never been through a break up like this, it's terrible.
